: Chinoiserie is a style of decorating which was
: intended to replicate a 'Chinese' look.
: This was accomplished through the addition
: of hand-painted decorations and appliques.
: It was popular in Europe during the
: 1700's. Since your piano was made in the
: late 1800's, the green paint and
: Chinoiserie was a fairly recent addition.
: To totally refinish a piano would cost
: approx. $2000. I'm also wondering if the
: 'black dirt' isn't just an antiquing glaze
: which is wiped over the paint in order to
: make the paint look old. This type of
: "antiquing" treatment was in
: vogue in th 1960's. If you send some pics
: to me I will try to descriminate further.

: What would be involved to restore my piano to
: the laquer finish it has underneat the
: Green Chinoiserie?
: When do you think the Chinoiserie was added
: to the piano?
: Thanks

I know the "antiquing kits" you are referring to, but to apply the Chinoiserie would have taken more skill than just using the kit.
What do you think was the original finish on this piano? Do you think it was a finish similar to that seen on Concert Grands today?
I will try and take some photos of the Piano and post them.
Thanks
Judy
