    You're right, chinoiserie is art and requires considerable talent if done properly. Applying a glaze to give an antique appearance, requires very little skill. The high gloss finishes you see on grand pianos are applied through a long process requiring many coats (more than 50) which are hand-rubbed between coats. It is unlikely that this is the finish on your piano. But send me a picture to be sure. Before you spend any money on the cabinet, have a piano technician check the action. You could have a broken pin-block or cracked sounding-board and not know it.
