    Why Will Wood Elixir Work?

    Strong solvents such as alcohol, will often work on shellac finishes but will leave the finish dull and streaky. This treatment will not work on lacquer which is probably what you have.
    The short version of why Wood Elixir works is that the active ingredients necessary to solve this problem are prevented from disapating prior to doing their job. Also, in the worst cases, rubbing with 0000 steel might be necessary and even if you manage to remove some of the finish in the process, Wood Elixir will leave behind a buffable membrane of tough finish which will seal and protect. As well, the finish can be 'built up' with additional treatments.
