This repair can be done at home but does require a bit of skill. The black marks are caused by the minerals in the water which has gone through the finish and into the wood. It can be bleached out after you remove the finish. The top can then be restained and refinished.

: My mother-in-law had a flower pot sitting on
: the kitchen table and it leaked and sat in
: the water for a day or so after I watered
: it. Water also ran a little ways from the
: pot. Where the plant was sitting is now a
: little black (mostly in the grain areas)
: and the areas are raised up. I think the
: table is an oak or oak veneer table. Is
: there any way I can fix this or should it
: be done professionally? Please respond
    : ASAP.
