    Yes, steam would ruin the surface. Identations are caused by pressure which compress the fibres of the wood such as something falling on it. Scratches are caused by removal of the surface and if it is deep, the wood itself is removed such as a gouge or deep scrape. A compression dent can be solved with heat and moisture ONLY after removing the finish. Deep scratches can be filled with colored wax fillers and then polished.
