1. Most factory finishes of this age are lacquer and they do chip more easily than varnish. These cabinets can be cleaned and the chips sealed and subdued in one step with Wood Elixir.
2. I'm not sure if you mean that the trim is painted or has paint smears on it. If it is painted, then depending on the type of paint, chemical stipping or heat stipping would be necessary. For the beginner, a good book on the subject is "The Furniture Doctor" by George Grotz. If it's just paint smears, Wood Elixir and steel wool is your answer.
