    If the area where the finish is missing is lighter, you can do an adequate job with an alcohol-based permanent colored marker. If the area of missing finish is darker, it can be touched up with paint to match the surrounding area. A more professional job can be done with shellac sticks but this does require some practice. I could not describe the techniques here but a good book covering this subject is "The Furniture Doctor" by G. Grotz.
