    No you can't re-introduce moisture. The damage you describe is caused by repeated wetting and drying. The leg bottoms will suffer the most since they will stay wet longest. The water will also cause the wood to turn grey. This can be reversed with a treatment or two of laundry bleach. You might be able to repair the split (which could be a lamination joint) by gluing and clamping. Then fill any remaining cracks with wood filler and then sand, stain and finish.
