Is it important to take it off? These sealers were applied to stop worping. It might still serve this purpose.

: I'm in the process of repairing an old oak
    : table, approximately 16"x18".
: On the underside of the top, there is a black
: sealer of some type. It is also on a
    : shelf.
: Since I'm going to refinish the entire piece,
: which is in several pieces right now, how
: do I get this stuff off? And what is it?
