--Previous Message-- : The finish on this side board is shellac and is : very vulnerable to dehydration and : moisture damage. You have both. Without : going into "why", I can tell you : that Wood Elixir applied with 0000 steel : wool will solve the crazing and the : dryness problem and it will clean off the : oil residue and seal the finish to prevent : a reocurrance of this problem. The light : area is a result of dehydration and can be : remedied with Wood Elixir. Wipe on, wipe : off. Please do not use lemon oil for any : wood treatment since it serves no purpose. : --Previous Message-- : 150 yr old side board with veneer front : drawers : has finish that has turned almost black : where the "flames patterns" are : in the veneer. Close examination reveals : crazing of the veneer in the direction of : the grain in these areas. Lemon oil was : used in it in the past and some other : areas on cabinet doors has turned dark, : possibly from oil seeping through thin : areas of finish.
