The finish on this side board is shellac and is very vulnerable to dehydration and moisture damage. You have both. Without going into "why", I can tell you that Wood Elixir applied with 0000 steel wool will solve the crazing and the dryness problem and it will clean off the oil residue and seal the finish to prevent a reocurrance of this problem. The light area is a result of dehydration and can be remedied with Wood Elixir. Wipe on, wipe off. Please do not use lemon oil for any wood treatment since it serves no purpose.

: 150 yr old side board with veneer front drawers
: has finish that has turned almost black
: where the "flames patterns" are
: in the veneer. Close examination reveals
: crazing of the veneer in the direction of
: the grain in these areas. Lemon oil was
: used in it in the past and some other
: areas on cabinet doors has turned dark,
: possibly from oil seeping through thin
: areas of finish. The doors and some other
: areas have some whitening due to sun
    : damage. Any suggestions?
