how to re-finish white child's bedroom furniture

I have my set of white bedroom furniture with the gold trim. I think it's called "white lacquer" (??) anyway I want to use it in a spare bedroom but want to re-do it so it's not the while girly furniture. I know you can't strip and stain this stuff,but can I sand it a bit and paint it?

Any suggestions?
