Antique Chest that is rusted too

I recieved my grandmothers chest and would like to refurbish it. It is metal and wood. The metal has an extreme amount of rust on it. What can I clean it with? If I bring it in the way it is it will ruin my carpeting for the rust. Please advise. Thank you.
