I have an unfinished pine hutch I would like to apply a color wash to. I only want a light amount of color on the base of the hutch and a deeper shade on the grain. Can I use a latex paint of my color choice and just wipe it on and then wipe it off, or do I have to shellac the piece first? I would like to do it in a rust color. I would like it to look pickled I think. I am not sure what the technique is called.
