Cleaning antique black lacquer furniture

We have an old black lacquer chest from Beijing that needs cleaning and polishing. It also has gold inlay and hand-cut soapstone designs. I read that you could boil strong tea and after it cools, clean the chest with that. Do you agree this would work? After that will it need a polishing or preserving oil, as well?
