Mahogany Mantle

I just purchased a mahogany mantle (1880s)with a beveled mirror. It is very dark (almost black)and the finish is rough in some areas (cracking/gritty) with some white paint brush marks (probably from painting adjacent trim). Should I strip and refinish?
