It sounds like your finish is lacquer and there are many types of lacquer, some tougher than others but the initial treatment is as follows: 1) Shake Wood Elixir until creamy 2) Pour on enough product to cover damaged area 3) Wait for about 10 minutes 4) Wipe dry.
More than one treatment might be required.
If there is still some white marks remainig then repeat using 0000 steel wool rubbing lightly with the grain. This might dull the finish somewhat but it can be brightened with subsiquent very light applications of Wood Elixir ... Wipe on, Wipe off and wait 24 hours before repeating.
