The reason that people painted old furniture was that usually there were problems that they would not fix. The reason for the paint being difficult to remove is that there was no finish left on that area when it was painted. I would take it to a stipper who has a "flow-over" stripping system. This is the ONLY way way to gain superior results. This piece also has sustained some severe water damage which has caused the dark discoloration and warping. These problems can also be solved but require disassembly and unique treatment. If you would like to do this yourself, then I suggest that you buy read a book which explains all of this. It's called 'The Furniture Doctor' by George Grotz. Read that and then deside what you feel comfortable in doing yourself. It can be fun or a burden.
