Depending on age, the finish, if original, is not varnish. If less than 75 years old it is lacquer. If more than 75 it could be shellac. Either way, it can be restored easily with Wood Elixir. I'm not sure what you mean by "bringing out the natural wood color" because all furniture in original condition has color added either to the finish or the wood prior to finishing. Wood Elixir will remove any contaminents on the finish which obscure the original look.
