You have asked a question that I can't do justice to in this small space but, here is what to do. Go to the library and ask for a book by George Grotz called The Furniture Doctor. It has a wealth of info regarding all aspects of furniture repair and refinishing and is explained in an easy to understand way. Of course there are many others.
