I purchased a couple of old chairs which I was told by shop owner were oak. They were painted white and I stripped them down. I discovered under the white was a blackish coating but not sure what it was. I've successfully removed all residue and now am left with a deep reddish color on most of the chair. The arms show the true color of the wood (oak). I tried wood bleach and it has not removed the red. What else can I try? My goal is to achieve a lighter color so that I can stain it Provencial oak to match a pedestal table.
