    The most common cause for checking is dehydration. The sun, of course, will heat up any surface it lands on which can contribute to the dryness but, lack of moisture is the enemy of the finish. Refinishing will solve the problem for some considerable time but if the same conditions persist, it can happen again. Wood Elixir will stop the process from continuing though it will not reverse it.
