    If it was an English antique, the finish would be shellac. Since it was made in the 1960's, it's probably lacquer. Because Lemon oil has no cleaning properties, you might consider using Wood Elixir to remove the old wax etc. This treatment will not only clean the finish but, it will solve the scratches, remove the white blush and seal what appear to be stress cracks caused by dehydration.
