I'd love to see the pictures; they would help a lot in my diagnosis. But I can still interperate: There are 1000's of different chemical formulae used to create finishes. I suspect that the finish you have is shellac based. On certain types of particularly soft finishes, the repairative action of Wood Elixir will "etch" the finish which means the it will dissolve those suspended particles near the surface. This is the action which removes the white water/heat marks. If this is the case, then the white mark caused by water or heat can be removed with Wood Elixir (following bottle directions) dripped onto that spot and left to work for a few minutes. Wipe dry and leave to cure (1 day). If after curing, the area is dull, it can be brightened with a second treatment of Wood Elixir with a few drops applied to a cotton cloth and rubbed on and again, wiped dry. If a higher gloss is desired, then polish with a cream wax containing carnauba.
