    Old Lettering on Wood

I have a wooden, oaken icebox, circa 1935, which has a few unreadable areas of black print letters on the back of the piece. The letters appear to have been of an oil base black paint. Would like to use a chemical which would lift the residual of the lost surface lettering so that I can read the printing on the back.
