The problem you describe is a common one which can be solved with WOOD ELIXIR. It does not matter what the wood is because the damage is in the finish which, if it is antique, is shellac. If the mark is light or white then it is moisture trapped in the finish which will be absorbed by the WOOD ELIXIR and the finish will be restored, probably with one treatment.
