    dark water stain on cherry

The reason for the water damage is that neither tung oil nor wax will provide ample protection against damage from liquids. To repair, you will have to remove the finish completely and bleach with oxalic acid (preferred) or laundry bleach. It can then be stained and a new finish applied.
