The easiest and safest way to clean the original finish is with Wood Elixir...wipe on...wipe off. If you did want to repaint it, apply a coat of shellac first and then it can be repainted with any type of paint.

: I have a 1930's wall clock that has the
: original green paint on it with colorful
: designs in red and yellow. It has not had
: any care and has hung in a house with oil
: and coal heat. How can I clean this
: residue without harming the existing paint
: and also, if I were to repaint it, what
    : paint should I use?
