    Black Lacquer Furniture Restoration

I have a large black lacquer CD and record cabinet which is MDF wood with several layers of high gloss black (enamel?) paint. Since my stereo system used to sit on top of it there are several faded areas on top and a few on the front. I would like to restore this piece but have no experience in this area. Another site suggests 0000 steel wool followed by a auto rubbing compound. Is this adviseable? Why use steel wool, wouldn't it scratch the surface? Is it only used in the faded areas or the entire top? And what brand of auto rubbing compound would work best here, applied in what amounts, using what type of cloth, removed how?
