Dear Colleen, I'm going to reprint your question below and answer it here. No, you're not doing it wrong. You just didn't go far enough. I'm glad to hear there are five coats of finish which gives you plenty to work with. You're right about the heat softening the finish allowing the blanket texture to be imprinted in the finish. The damage would have been much worse if the finish was shellac. I should mention that Wood Elixir is formulated to clean and restore and strengthen the original finish and although it has polishing characteristics, it is not a furniture polish. You have found that coarse steel wool (0), will dull the finish but all is not lost. Here's what to do. Using fine (000) steel wool, apply Wood Elixir rubbing in the direction of the grain until desired smoothness is attained. Repeat using extra fine (0000) steel wool. Wipe dry. Leave 24 hours to cure. For increased shine, polish with high quality cream car polish containing Carnauba wax. Do a small test area first so you know how much pressure is required to reduce the imprints. Please let me know how you make out. Best Regards, Murray __________________________________________________ Subject: Am I doing this right?
