    Varnish vs Lacquer?

I have an old piano 70-90 yrs that has developed
a lined/swirled embossed finish. I at first hoped
it might be old wax. The finish appears to be a yellowish powder when rubbed and sometimes waxy brown streaks on rag.
How do I tell if this was varnish or lacquer and are there different ways to try to bring back the nice deep cherry mahogany it was originally?

Can you feed the wood with Tung oil or should I use a beeswax compound after?

Any suggestions because the steel wool and the rubbing involved to smoothe it just might be taking off the old finish...then what do I do?
