    There are two possible problems. Where the stain is light, the sealer used under the original finish was not completely removed. This can be done with more sanding. The second possiblity is that if the surface is curved, it will show some 'end' grain which will absorb more of the stain and therefore be darker. Again, sanding is the answer. An even color can them be accomplished by using a tinted finish.
