If the water stain is white or light color, it is in the finish and it can be solved with Wood Elixir without any refinishing. If it is dark or black, the finish must be removed and bleached. The most satisfactory results on floors will be achieved by sanding, bleaching stained areas and applying a new polyurethane finish. It's worth the effort.
