    repairing cabinets and wood trim

We moved into a 6 yr. old house where the finish on all of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, has started to wear away or faded. Along the grains of the wood is especially dry/faded. Meanwhile, the rest of the wood is nicely varnished. I have tried lemon oil and waxes with great initial success, but after 3 weeks, the wood returns to its dry, blotchy state. I have tried Howard's Restore a Finish bet even the clear tint darkens the dry wood, giving it a dirty look. What can I do to repair the look of my wood cabinets?
