    Cleaning dirty pews

How can I clean deeply ingrained black scuff marks from 50-yr old finished church pews. I originally considered refinishing the pews (22 total). However, after closer inspection, I determined that refinishing was unnecessary. The pews are in very good shape, but they are dirty. Murphy's Oil Soap will not penetrate the surface and really clean down to the wood grain. Is there a creme or lotion for real and effective deep-down cleaning? The pews are a light colored-wood, finished with a "yellowish" varnish.
