Dents can be repaired by introducing moisture into the wood causing it to swell. This is fairly easy with unfinished wood and can be done with a steam iron. Finished wood is a different problem but can be solved through a process called 'shellac stick patching'. This job does require considerable skill. A good book to read describing this technique is "The Furniture Doctor" by George Grotz.
