    Any wood referred to as clear, is without knots. Cedar, being an oily wood, is often not finished which is probably the case here. If you deside to use other than a simple oil finish, apply a coat of shellac first to seal in the oil which will allow the new finish to adhear properly. Check at a good paint store for suggestions on what compatible finishes they carry.
