    Will I lose value?

I just purchased an antique roll top desk.
The ownere believes that the desk is circa 1850,
though I can find no brand or label which gives me
the manufacturer let alone the date.

The desk was stored in a barn and with the
exception of the tambour, which was in the open
position, the finish, while largely intact, is
    almost black.

I'd like to restore the finish to bring
out the charm of the old quarter sawn oak but you
always hear about someone destroying the value of
their peice by removing patina. Can a peice be
    restored without ruining it?

    Thanks
    Bob
