    Yes, it can be done with lacquer thinner but this is not a task for an amateur. Steel wool can produce the desired results if care is taken to rub only in the direction of the grain with even strokes. This job is easier to do with "Scotchbright" pads which is a kind of wooley-looking sponge used by auto body shops. Their throw-aways are good for this job. The third option is to scuff the surface lightly and spray with a satin or semi-gloss clear lacquer.
