    Refinishing Bleached Wood

We bought a house 3 months ago that has quite a bit of oak (I believe) that was bleached in the 50-60's. This was done to the stair case, which includes 100 square spindles, oak paneling along the stairs, built in cabinets in the dining room, Trim around a stained glass window and around doors. (Fortunately, the pocket doors were not bleached!)

We want to redo the wood back to the original; however, we have been told by an expert in the area that it can't be fixed, unless we sand down several layers of wood.

Is there anything that you can recommend that would allow us to refinish the wood.
