FIRST OF ALL...This and any other web site claiming an easy solution is full of shit.
There is no easy, simple "secret" to wood finishing as these rip off / scam artist scumbags wood have you innocent homeowners believe. The visuals they show are as easy as wiping down a piece of furniture w/ mineral spirits ($3/ gallon) Wait an hour and the effect disappears due to evaporation. To solve your problem... First- Don't buy their crap. #2 Clean/ strip your banister w/ denatured alcohol and steel wool. Let it dry for at least 2 hours (#0000 or #000 is the best)Then apply a penetrating stain (alcohol based)and then brush on a simple laquer such as the gallon cans available at your local paint shop or Home Depot. Lightly sand in between coats w/ 220 and then 320 paper and then #0000 steel wool. (do at least 3 coats)
P.S. There is very little possibility that your banister is cherry. It is most likely walnut or mahogany. Call me w/ any questions and I'll be glad to help Mike (908)319-0969

: The bannister in my house is cherry. The finish
: on the top rail has been worn off almost
: completely by 100 years worth of hands so
: that the top is now much lighter than the
: rest of the wood. What can I do without
: stripping the thing down and starting from
: scratch. The same thing goes for my
: window ledges. Help me find an easy
    : solution.
