    Polyurethane

Have chest with original old varnish finish. Need to make waterproof; will be dropping lavatory down in top counter surface as seen in many decor magazines to be used in the bath. Will use polyurethane. Does the varnish have to be stripped totally or can the surface be sanded and treated to accept the urethane? I've always stripped before adding urethane in all past projects.
