    camel-back trunk

I've inherited a camel-back trunk that I want to restore. It came from Norway approx. early 1900's.
On all sides there are strips of wood which I got cleaned up; the outer edges of each side have a black metal(it has been painted) the middle of each side is leather, some of which is engraved with designs. The leather on the top is very dark - almost black, on the sides it is lighter, but still very dirty and all of it appears "dry"
My question: how do I restore the leather myself? Or should I have it done proffesionally - are there any questions to ask to ensure quality restoration? Thanks!
